There are few sports video games that have the clout of NBA Jam and recently, head designer of the classic NBA game Mark Turmell spoke with ESPN the Magazine about creating the original game.
One of the questions asked was about an NBA Jam myth regarding the Chicago Bulls where it was believed that Scottie Pippen would go down in ratings based on playing certain teams.
Turmell revealed that myth to be somewhat true:
It’s true, but only when the Bulls played the Pistons. If there was a close game and anyone on the Bulls took a last second shot, we wrote special code in the game so that they would average out to be bricks. There was the big competition back in the day between the Pistons and the Bulls, and since I was always a big Pistons fan, that was my opportunity to level the playing field.
