The Atlanta Hawks have finally won a first-round playoff series; it was their first win since 1999. That team featured Mookie Blaylock, Dikembe Mutombo, Steve Smith and some guy named Chris Crawford. Well, it seems that Josh Smith is happy that the team has finally cast away that feeling of futility and taken a certain animal off the cities back.
Here is more from Real GM.com:
Hawks forward Josh Smith, who was a member of the team when they were a perennial doormat, is thrilled to be a part of the club’s resurgence.
“It feel like the monkey’s off Atlanta’s back,” Smith said. “Not just the team’s back. The whole city.”
The Hawks defeated the Heat in Game 7 on Sunday, their first Game 7 win since 1961 when they were still the St. Louis Hawks.
I am usually a fan of sports clichés but to be honest, the whole “getting the monkey off my back” never really sunk in for me. Especially since the Hawks have only won a first round playoff series. (Hell, even the Clippers did that) I think you have to do a lot more than win one playoff series to officially get “the monkey” off your back.
Also, what type of monkey was it anyway? Was it a gorilla, orangutan, spider monkey, or my favorite, evil monkey.
However, there should be some congratulations in store for the Hawks since they finally did win a playoff series and not against a push-over team. The Hawks reward for beating the Miami Heat, they get to meet the Cleveland Cavaliers in the next round.
Wait a second….that’s not a reward at all.
